Our History
It has been thirty-three years since Keith Jackson received the vision to create a place to provide kids with hope, strong values, and confidence in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. Positive Atmosphere Reaches Kids (P.A.R.K., Inc.) is a place that was founded in early 1995. P.A.R.K. Foundation was incorporated for fundraising purposes for P.A.R.K., Inc.
In 1995, P.A.R.K. opened its doors to 25 high-risk eighth-graders who were falling through the cracks of the educational system and at risk of becoming a statistic in a growing group of dropouts, gang members, and drug and alcohol users. In May 2000, eight of the twenty-five initial students graduated from the program. Beginning with the 2000 summer program, P.A.R.K. reached its target capacity of serving 250 students a year.
In 2002, the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation of Las Vegas, Nevada, granted P.A.R.K. $5.2 million in funding for a total renovation. In 2004, Rachel Williams became P.A.R.K.'s first college graduate, graduating from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and the first in her family to attend college.
In 2007, P.A.R.K. raised funding for a program sustainability endowment.
P.A.R.K. celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2015 with a fundraiser, which allowed it to reach its endowment goal. In 2017, former P.A.R.K. student Lee Miller earned his Juris Doctorate.
In 2019, P.A.R.K. began raising funds for the education and transportation endowment in the event that its student transport via the school district's buses ends.
In 2020, P.A.R.K. celebrated its Silver Anniversary with many commitments to the education and transportation endowment. Also, in 2020, P.A.R.K. saw its first Ph.D. student. Marquese McFerguson, PhD, received his degree in Communication Studies from the University of South Florida.
There are many beautiful stories of former students making positive moves through entrepreneurship, educators, corporate business, law enforcement, the military, and so much more.
P.A.R.K. is proud of the one hundred thirty-five college graduates with 173 degrees from 41 colleges and universities!
P.A.R.K. is celebrating its 30th year of impacting the youth in central Arkansas this year.
